They may shout when they are frustrated. They may withdraw because they do not know how to explain what is bothering them.

This is why communication is a skill children need to learn.

Parents can teach children to express their feelings with words rather than through shouting, aggression, or silence.

Simple questions can help: “How did that make you feel?”

“What are you trying to tell me?”

“Can you explain what happened?”

Children also need to learn that good communication involves listening.

They should learn to wait their turn, listen when someone is speaking, ask questions when they do not understand, and express disagreement respectfully.

Parents have an important role because children learn communication by watching the adults around them.

How we speak to our children, especially when we are frustrated, can become the example they follow.

James 1:19 reminds us to be “quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”

Final Thoughts

Teaching children how to communicate is about more than helping them speak clearly.

It teaches them how to understand others, express themselves, manage disagreements, and build healthy relationships.

Every conversation at home is an opportunity to teach a child how to communicate with wisdom, kindness, and respect.

Children have a lot to say.
